Identifying Local Opportunities

Gainesville man charged with identity theft, fraud

The man was caught stealing a person’s identity and using up to $2,000 in credit card charges. There are also speculations that he was also doing the same thing with other individuals information. Luckily, the perpetrator is behind bars in Alachua county jail.
The problem in the story is the fact that a man is committing fraud along with identity thefts of what police believe more than one person.
The person that has the problem in this situation is clearly the man that is in jail for committing fraudulent activity.

Gainesville friends plan a boat trip to help Bahamas

Charlene Rigby was affected by hurricane Floyd, the damage was such she was desperately looking for dry ground during the natural disaster. After her experience she felt the need to plan a trip to aid the Bahamas, where she also had some cousins residing. Trevor Rolle is one of Rigby’s former classmates and together they put together a fundraiser in which the plan consists of once enough money is collected they will do a humanitarian aid mission to the Bahamas.
The problem of the this situation is the fact that the Bahamas were hit by a catastrophic natural disaster a little over a week ago and need help. Now the only thing between Rigby and Rolle’s plan to aid the Bahamas is the amount of money they are able to raise so their trip can be a success.
The entity in this story that really has the problem is the Bahamas, they were hit with a hurricane that reshaped their state to the point where they require aid from outside organizations or governments in order to get back on their feet.

Florida ‘psychic’ gets prison time for scamming a woman out of 1.6 million dollars

A woman from Florida has been caught scamming a Texas family by telling them that they were cursed by a fortune teller. The scammer was able to get 1.6 million dollars out of the family in order for her to ‘reverse” the curse. The victim paid the scammer with inheritance money and money that she had made from stripping. A private investigator from Texas was able to catch the scam due to him being specialized in cases that consist of scammers through psychic methods.
The problem in this dilemma is that fact that a family in Texas got scammed out of over one million dollars because they believed a ‘psychic’ when she said the family was cursed. Now the scammer is facing jail time due to her actions against the innocent Texas family.
The person in this story who really has a problem is the scammer because she is being convicted of her crimes and is being forced by the law to give back all the money she stole from the Texas family throughout the years.

A family’s first Disney trip didn’t happen. A year later, their tragedy remains unsolved

A man decided to take his family to Disney World for the first time, the family was from Colombia. The father came a few days before the family to Miami to visit some friends before he met up with his family in Orlando. He purchased the bus ticket but he never made it, he was killed in a hit and run accident. To this day nobody is responsible for the fathers murder because the hitter was never found.
The problem in this situation is the fact that nobody was ever able to find the person responsible for hitting the man and running. He is still on the loose and that is a grave problem for Miami officials and the family that was affected. Basically, nothing has been done with this case, therefore, not being able to solve the case is the biggest problem.
I would say the main characters that have the problem in this circumstance is the family of the father who was killed. They were never able to have justice over an accident that will put a large dent in a family for the rest of their lives.

They live with autism. But it hasn’t prevented them from getting jobs in South Florida

Valerie Herskowitz has a son with autism and was very concerned in finding him a meaningful job. She took matters in to her own hands and decided to open up a company making mail-order chocolates in her home in West Palm Beach. She had her son help her and the company grew and continued to grow, after she needed more employees she decided to take into special consideration people with autism. She has since created an immense impact on the autistic society and has focused on helping people with disabilities get a job.
The main problem in this story is the simple fact that most employers try to avoid or hire the minimum amount of disabled individuals possible. This makes it hard for people on the spectrum and other disabilities to find fulfilling jobs. It is an issue that is ongoing in the society we live in today.
The individuals who are directly affected by this problem are of course those with disabilities that have a hard time finding jobs. Along with the families that can just stand there and watch as their family member gets rejected and has a difficult time caring for themselves because of a disability that isn’t even their fault in the first place.

  1. Hey Ricardo! I noticed that the majority of the local opportunities that you identified are crime-related, so, I am interested to see how you would go about solving such issues, as they are typically categorized as political issues. It’s truly disheartening that the vast majority of news stories nowadays are consumed by crime and violence (and natural disasters). These opportunities have devastating/horrible origins, so, I wonder how you could capitalize on such opportunities while still solving said issues.
