Identifying Opportunities in Economic & Regulatory Trends

Economic Trend Opportunity #1- A taxi company that runs solely on electricity.

a)    My girlfriend is a sustainability major and she stated electric cars are much cheaper than cars that run on petroleum.
b)    Due to the fact electric car energy is much cheaper than cars that run on gases energy, in the long run would make Uber go out of business.
c)     I believe everyone is a likely customer, if you could Uber while saving the planet and probably for cheaper who wouldn’t.
d)    The only reason I believe this opportunity would be difficult to exploit is because a massive amount of start-up money is needed and the fact that not many individuals have electric cars.
Why: I believe the reason why I saw this opportunity is because my uncle David works at Tesla in Miami and after going to the dealership to visit him I decided my first self-bought car would be a Tesla, therefore, I think my desires were what propelled this opportunity.

Economic Trend Opportunity #2- Alcoholic beverages in cardboard boxes.
a)    I found this opportunity because almost two weeks ago during the tailgate I was drinking coconut water from a cardboard box, this made me think about sustainability and alcohol combined.
b)    The fact that anything sustainable or “green” is a factor many people consider nowadays and the natural love society has for alcohol could go great together.
c)     I believe young adults would be the main customers for a product like this one, a drink ideal for a tailgate.
d)    In my opinion this opportunity is quite an easy one to exploit, the reason being how popular both aspects of the opportunity are at the moment as well as not needing much capital to create.
Why: In my experiences both alcohol and sustainability are very popular among college students right now. Many people I have met are either worried about the harm we have done to Earth and alcohol being one of the main things college students look forward to as well as some that are in to both.

Regulatory Change Opportunities #3- Make Greek Life shirts that correlate with upcoming election.
a)    I have a friend that has a shirt press he does not use and is willing to get rid of for cheap. This factor along with an election year coming up make great way for this specific opportunity.
b)    The reason why I think this information provides an opportunity is because both shirts and elections complement each other extensively.
c)     The main customers I believe would be frat and sorority members because the shirts are going to be cheap and simple, an aspect I have seen appeals to many college students.
d)    Taking in to consideration that my friend has a shirt press he is willing to sell for cheap I think this is an easy opportunity to exploit, especially because there is not going to be a huge initial investment.
Why: I believe my experiences in college have helped visualize how students mainly wear simple t-shirts with a simple press design. This along with the opportunity of having a cheap shirt press at my disposal made me realize what could be possible if done correctly.

Regulatory Change Opportunities #4- Make a natural e-cigarette that would not be bad for the lungs and soothing.
a)    The news continuing to go on about how electronic cigarettes have over 500 cases of lung problems because of toxic chemicals in them.
b)    People are starting to stop vaping because of these headlines, producing and being able to market an e-cigarette that does not contain any chemicals could be revolutionary.
c)     I believe the same customers pertaining to the electronic cigarette market of the moment would be the main consumers. This abides younger adults and teens 18-19 years of age.
d)    The only problem in this opportunity is the fact that getting an engineer or scientist to create such a device would be very expensive. Other than this issue I believe implementing a natural e-cigarette in the market would be a very profitable idea.
Why: From what I have seen in university I have experienced many individuals addicted to e-cigarettes like the “Juul” and the “Stig”. All at the same time these people think they are being healthy because it is not tobacco, therefore, adding a natural e-cigarette to the vaping market would be life changing for many people.

  1. Hi Ricardo! While I love the idea of the opportunity you identified regarding storing alcohol in cardboard containers to be more sustainable, I immediately thought of the practicality of its use. The permeability of cardboard may not be up to the same standard as glass or aluminum, making it so the alcohol couldn’t be stored for as long. Additionally, the material a drink is stored in affects its taste (although that may not matter for a number of individuals). These potential issues, however, may not be that important for the purposes of having alcohol at tailgates. After all, boxed wine exists. The other opportunities you identified are potentially great to get into if you have the resources!

  2. Ricardo, I think you came up with some great points in your identification of regulatory opportunities. I especially like the idea for a healthier alternative to the Juul/e-cig. With how prevalent these devices are now and cases of kids dying from using them I could see this potentially becoming a big idea. Additionally, I like the idea of alcohol in cardboard boxes since thousands of cans are used every game day and a more sustainable option would be very useful.
